What is air freight?
To quote an air freight, the first thing that must be clear is its definition: it is the price that exporters or importers must assume for the international air transport of the goods sent, always with an Incoterm agreed between the sender and the receiver.
Basic charges for quoting an air freight
Unlike sea freight, quotes for air freight are usually simpler. Everything is usually quoted as a single package, as opposed to the more detailed options found in ocean freight. Typically, the freight option is chosen, which is billed based on the weight in kilograms of the cargo. However, different types of surcharges may also apply:
- Fuel or FSC: Corrects for fluctuations in fuel prices, applying a surcharge as necessary.
- Currency exchange: A surcharge applies if freight is paid in a currency other than the Euro, usually around 1%.
- IRC: Risk insurance covering possible security incidents at the airport prior to cargo loading.
It is important to note the differences between Europe and the rest of the world in terms of rates and surcharges. Although different criteria were previously applied, there is now a tendency towards standardisation, using the chargeable weight to calculate freight, fuel and IRC.
